Our hogs enjoy a diet of whatever they can forage in the forest, root crops dug up with their own snouts, clover, vetch, and peas planted in a field especially for them. The fall hogs finish themselves on the local acorn crop. They feed themselves for the most part except for supplemental treats like locally sourced peanuts, oats, or alfalfa on top of their field crop grazing. Our pigs area also lucky to get access to our local breweries' fermented barley and other grain, rich in probiotics to keep them happy and healthy.
Besides fencing which protects our pigs from wandering off into the wilderness (or onto our front porch), they are free to roam our property. We have several paddocks covering a couple acres each. Tim has put up a handful of temporary structures in the forest where he takes fresh bedding every few days so that they can find shelter from rain or claim a place to farrow. Otherwise, they just frolick about, the makings of happy bacon.
